Rataje nad Sázavou Chateau

Zámecká 1, 285 07 Rataje nad Sázavou

The upper Gothic castle from the 14th century was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau from the 16th century. In 1675, František Maxmilián of Talmberk built the castle with the participation of the builder O. de Guarde. Today, it houses a museum with many exhibitions, an information centre and the Chateau Schenk.

The three-winged storey building on the ground plan near the southern wing of the originally Gothic castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance building with a pavilion on the first floor. The western and northern wings were rebuilt in early Baroque style with an arcaded courtyard. Above the passage in the west wing is the coat of arms of the Lords of Talmberk, on the roof is a turret with a lantern. In the ground floor arcade of the north wing there are two narrow Gothic broken windows from the original castle.

A three-winged building of the former Renaissance brewery stands at the west front of the castle. In front of the castle you will find an early Baroque church consecrated in 1691 on the remains of an older Gothic church.

Today the castle houses a museum with a permanent exhibition on the historical and architectural development of Rataj, including the development of the settlement (archaeological part). Other rooms offer visitors an exposition with a thematic focus on the Middle Ages of the central Posázaví region. Visitors will find a wealth of information about other architectural and archaeological monuments in the area. The exposition is complemented by a private collection of carriages and an exposition of the wood-cutting museum. In the attic space there is also a collection of "Life in the Village Courtyard. During a visit there is an opportunity to see the Baroque part of the castle in which the museum is housed. You will also find the Information Centre and the Chateau Schenk.
