Svatopluk Čech's Birthplace

Ostředek 1, 257 24 Ostředek

The Baroque chateau from 1739 is nowadays used for a purpose. It houses the birthplace of the poet Svatopluk Čech with an exhibition about his life and work.

The one-storey Baroque building with the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk from 1741 was built on the site of the original fortress. In the chapel there is a statue of Bohemia from 1765, exhibited at the World EXPO in Montreal. There is also the birthplace of the poet Svatopluk Čech, who was born in the castle in 1846. His father, František Jaroslav Čech, was the manager of the farm. At the age of two months, however, the future poet moved with his parents to Skalka in the Bohemian Central Highlands. The poet's birthplace, which can still be seen in the chateau today, was established by the Ostředec family in 1898. In 1921, a commemorative plaque by J. Kadlec was unveiled above the entrance to the chateau.
