Cultural area U Martina

Benešovská 441, Sázava

The cultural hall U Martina in the building of the former Baroque rebuilt church is used for cultural events (concerts, author readings, exhibitions), wedding ceremonies are also held here. It is also rented out to other entities to organise cultural events that are suitable for their dramaturgy. The former mortuary houses the exhibition From the Karel Král Museum.

The first mention of St. Martin's Church dates back to 1402, some sources consider the Romanesque origin of the nave. Unlike the town, the church was probably fortified, as evidenced by the preserved high enclosure wall of the cemetery. The appearance of the building was fundamentally changed in the mid-18th century, when its orientation was reversed (nowadays to the west) during an otherwise not very significant Baroque reconstruction; the tower windows in particular have been preserved. The church was rebuilt in 1856-57 after an earlier fire. Further repairs followed in 1888 and 1981-82, when it was converted into a cultural hall. It still serves this purpose today.

The adjacent area (former cemetery) was reconstructed in 2013. Among other things, it included the construction of a lapidarium from the original tombstones and the reconstruction of a baroque carner (mortuary).

From the Karel Král Museum The private Karel Král Museum was one of the most interesting attractions in Sázava. "When I was about 10 years old, my father took me to the National Museum. That's when I had the idea to start a museum in Sázava. My friend František Církva and I started collecting coins, paper inflation money and minerals. We made the first exhibition above the cellar of the Církva family, but the coins were falling through the potatoes," Karel Král recalled in an interview from 2007. Eventually he built a museum in the attic of his house in Černé Budy. After Karel Kral's death, his entire family was in favour of lending the collection to the town. This is how the exhibition in the restored cemetery chapel U Martina was created for the 20th anniversary of the town of Sázava.

St. Martin's Church is also part of the popular Czech RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
